The band Katatonia has gone through many changes in sound over the years at the same time as remaining smooth sounding and very creative. Their sound is a combination of progressive rock, death metal, black metal and alternative rock. They are mellow, they are heavy, and at times they are trippy. They have released a huge number of albums over the years since the early 1990's and they hail from the country of Sweden.
The album Brave Murder Day/For Funerals to Come is a very heavy, melodic and creative piece of work. It is not for the faint of heart musically because it is pretty heavy. Mikael Akerfeldt of the band Opeth sings all lead vocals. Mostly death metal vocals but there are mellow vocals also. Anyone who likes the first two Opeth albums will dig this Katatonia album. Mikael and the members of Katatonia grew up together so that is why Mikael was asked to do vocals on this one.
I love the melodic guitar riffs and the warm clean guitar parts on this album a lot. The clean parts relate to me because they reminded me of a lot of my own guitar style when I write clean parts. The vocals are brutal but the mellow parts vocally could've been recorded better. They were produced a little quiet. This band during this period in their career had the Swedish death metal sound boarderlining prog rock. But trust me, each album has it's own unique vibe. Some albums heavier, some mellow but this band is great. They are releasing a new album on March 13th, 2006. Check them out everyone... Jason
