This is the original soundtrack for the film 'The Virgin Suicides'. An excellent film, btw. Here the French duo created what has been described as 'The Dark Side Of The Moon Safari': Moon Safari being their first album, a mix of 70's pop, electro, triphop, french kitsch, and symphonic elements, very innocent and light sounding.
The Virgin Suicides has a much darker, and somewhat Pink Floydish sound, with great melancholic melodies and drama, without getting mushy or bombastic. Mostly short atmospheric pieces, combining classic synthsounds (Mellotron, Rhodes, Moogs, Solina...)and rock instruments.
Though they are both classically trained musicians, they base their songs more around sounds so they say. Well, they're creating some very catchy melodies in the process. This is lump-in-the-throat and goosebumps music. Highlights : the psychedelic "The Word Hurricane", and the Hawkwindish "Dead Bodies".
Weak moments : none.

The first time I heard this album I was in a bit of a rush and, so, I only heard the first music. I didn't like it very much mainly because of the vocals, which I thought were a bit popish, as I still do, and that the biggest music was only 6 minutes long. But after listening to that Pink Floydish sax my curiosity grew, so, some days later, I picked it up again and listened to some more music and the result was that I bought it.
It is a good album, with good instrumental music, with good keyboard work and also drums (by Brian Reitzell). It reminds me a lot Pink Floyd, Eno, Jean Michael Jarre and also early Vangelis. In fact some parts the album remind me of 666 by Aphrodite's Child (Vangelis first band), especially the spoken "the word 'Hurricane'" and "Suicide underground" that remind me of "Loud, loud". There is also something in the album that reminds me of "The prophecy theme" from Brian Eno (Dune sound track), even though I cannot find it specifically.
As it is, the album is very good for lovers of electronic and ambient music, very soothing and sweet, but not mellow.
If they stretched the tracks a bit longer or mixed the tracks in one big track it would be a perfect album (at least for me). As highlights I would choose "The world 'Hurricane'" and "Dirty trip", but the album is consistently good. 7 in 10
