Formed as a classical string quartet while studying music in Iceland, Anima (as they were originally known) did session music on many artists' works. They came into the public eye mostly through their strings and additional instrumentation for Sigur Ros. Swapping a couple of letters, and adding an "i" to become Amiina, they also started writing their own material. Their debut album, Kurr was the result.

In a world of formulaic music, dictated by the dubious fortune telling of MBA qualified marketers at major record labels, radio stations staffed by ex wannabe musos and the cynical, embittered music press where what is "cool" rules Icelandic music is a breath of fresh (albeit it sulfur-tinged and cold) air. And in that refreshing world of Icelandic contemporary music where the music and the fun determine the sounds, not popularity polls and back-slapping orgies of Grammy-like self-congratulation, Amiina shines as brightly as any.

Playful, melancholy, deliciously layered and structured, it is music as pure emotion and warmth. Kurr is that rarity in this day and age, a truly original and beautiful work of love in music. These four Icelandic musicians' passion for making delicate, evocative songs is obvious, and infectious.

Yes, it is quirky. Yes, it features sizzling tuned crystal glass, dulcimer and xylophone solos. And, yes, it is mind-bogglingly ethereal, fey, joyful, playful, eclectic, eccentric and melancholy all at the same time. It is riveting, and surpassingly marvelous.

It's not progressive in the classic sense, but it is progressive in it's exploration of themes, instrumentation and structure. If you consider yourself a true lover of music, you give Amiina a listen. They are a revelation.
