NEU! 2 is the most controversial of the three major NEU! albums, largely because side two of the album is merely slowed down and sped up versions of NEU!'s hit singles. To be fair, this was not NEU!'s fault, but, as always, blame lies squarely at the feet of the music industry, who, when NEU! ran out of money, would not let them postpone releasing the album. So, with only half an LP of music, NEU! had little choice but to do what they did.
Given this, this album is surprisingly good. "Fur Immer" is a classic NEU! track. There are those who would say it's merely "Hallogallo" part 2, but I can only assume those people are missing something. "Hallogallo" focused Rother's psychedelic pastures with the drums keeping the song focused. This song focuses on the drums with Rother's guitar more of an afterthought. I prefer "Hallogallo", but this track is still quite different in sound, energy, and feel, and it deserves credit as such.
The rest of the album is relatively inconsequential, however. Yes, it's sometimes nice to hear "Super" played really slowly and then really quickly and then normally, but it gets old after a while. The same goes for the rest of the tracks. Because of this, you should only get this album if you really like their debut and NEU! '75, both of which are more consistent albums. This album will please NEU! fans, but it's not essential in the same way that it predecessor and follow-up are.
