A great new “raw diamond” from UK well worth checking out.
Touchstone is a fairly new progressive outfit from the UK. This is their second release, which shows that they have the potential to take it very far. Touchstone is a 5 piece band; Rob Cottingham: vocals, keys, sfx; Lis Clayden: vocals; Adam Hodgson: guitars; Paul Moorghen: bass, backing vocals; Simon Cook: drums. Also they had help mixing this EP, from no other than “our very own” John Mitchell (Arena-Kino-Frost).
There are 4 tracks on this EP. Starting out with “Misguided Fool”, which is a great rocking track, with a catchy melody, great keys and awesome guitar “metal” hooks. The vocals between Rob and Lis are just great. Second track “One Shot” is a little more “gentle” in the sound, but still with some great guitar hooks and some awesome keys, alongside great vocal harmonies. Drumming and bass really set the phase here. Third track “Hear Me”, is perhaps the most catching track, very melodic and very beautiful. It contains some amazing keys and again some very powerful and beautiful vocals between Rob & Lis. One those songs/melodies that stays with you for a very long time. Great Track. Final track which is also the longest (8:19) is the title track “The Mad Hatters’ Song”. This is perhaps the most “proggy” track, with many guitar hooks, breaks, great vocals, some very heavy keys and great interplay between bass and drums. A great and very proggy track.
Well, to sum this EP up, I must confess that I really like it. It is very British and you can hear/feel that this great and upcoming band really knows one another. I would not be a bit surprised if they made it big, some sunny day. Catching melodies, great vocals, good interplay and some really nice lyrics. Also the cover art work is really great. So, I’ll sit tight and wait until Touchstone release a full album. Until then I think you should tjeck out their homepage or their site at MySpace for some sound samples. Touchstone is a future band in the raw.
