Mirage are a French outfit and as their name would suggest, they are heavily into Camel, their music and style. Even their cover art bares resemblance to that of the great Camel. Now, don’t get me wrong…these French guys are really good. Problem is, they are so much into Camel that you spend your time trying to work out where this and that section of music comes from according to the real thing.
Now I’m only aware of 2 albums with Mirage (this being their latest) and I’ll have to say that the cover of this album is quite ...ahem...ugly. Imagine a desert landscape with a green sofa!? Yes, I told you so. Even IKEA wouldn’t make that happen!
Me being a Camel freak, I cannot help thinking....well, I have to be nice… that these guys know their stuff and they really strut it. Especially Stephan Forner on guitar, knows his Latimer tricks and licks. By I would anytime choose Camel or may I say this French outfit is great, but just not great enough to concur with Camel.
So, I’m not in love, at least not with Tales From The Green Sofa.
A real Camel is no mirage.
