A quartet consisting of four sessions men called The Hotlegs, the band scored a worldwide hit by the name of “Neanderthal Man”, and building upon this hit single and their signing with the famous Jonathan King (whom would later christened the band 10cc).
On the bands first album 10cc, eponymously named after the band, is one the great pop albums and debuts of the seventies. The album covered a wide spectrum of genres and strangely themed subjects, but in overall, betrayed a slight detail for odd time signatures and symphonic timbres that underlies its “pop” roots.
Similar to contemporaries Roxy Music, and obvious influence The Beatles, 10cc became a hit with the critics for being different than what the normal music of its time. Showing a sophistication on each song, whether it be in the multi-vocal sung tracks, or the intricate musicianship or the top rate songwriting, 10cc is an album that is so goofy on first appearance, then its catchy songs finally catches the listener in its grasp.
10cc would also yield a few worldwide hits, in the politically based “Rubber Bullets”, 50’s-ish “Donna” and the great “The Dean and I”. Other gems on 10cc, include the disc’s other 50-ish parody, “Johnny Don’t Do It”, the hilarious “Sand In My Face”, the tongue-in-cheek lyrics of “The Hospital Song” and the albums closer, “Headline Hustler”.
Not to be taken seriously, 10cc, is a wonderful disc that despite its satirical based music, the album still borders on parody, but yet shows a quartet of talented musicians, that shocked the world with humor.
